Alvarado set to fight Herrera April 14

By Francisco Salazar
In an attractive bout that had been in the works for some time, unbeaten Mike Alvarado will fight once-beaten junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera in a 10 round bout on April 14th, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman confirmed to Fightnews.com on Monday night. “Herrera is in to face Alvarado,” said Goodman. The fight will open the telecast of an HBO telecast, which will precede the main event bout between hard-hitting unbeaten lightweight fighters Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
In his last fight, Alvarado (32-0, 23 KOs) had to rally from an early deficit to stop former lightweight contender Breidis Prescott in the 10th and final round on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez bout on November 12th.
Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs) has won his last five bouts in a row since a controversial eight round split decision loss to former world title belt holder Mike Anchondo in December of 2009. Last January, Herrera won a hard-fought 12 round split decision over hard-hitting Russian Ruslan Provodnikov. In his last bout, he won a 10 round majority decision over Mike Dallas Jr. on June 24th at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA.
“This is a great opener for the HBO card,” said Alex Camponovo, chief matchmaker for Thompson Boxing Promotions, who promotes Herrera. “We have all the respect for Alvarado, but this will be a great fight for Mauricio. This will be great exposure for him.”
The card, which will be promoted by Top Rank, will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
