It was an action night at Red and Jerry's, Englewood, Colorado!
Thanks to Steve "Matchmaking" Mestas the fights were great.
The first bout was between middleweights, Zachary Hardrick (2-0) vs. Allen "Funky Cold" Medina ( 9-21-1 1 ko's) of the H.O.P. Boxing gym. Zachary added a quick win to his record, stopping Allen in the first rd by way of tko.
Both fighters are 6'+, Zachary found his range first and dominated Allen.

The next bout was between Heavyweights, Kenny "Sagrado Warrior" Lemos (11-7-2 8 ko's) out of D-Town gym vs. Louis " The Facelifter" Monoco ( 16-36-5 8 ko's) out of the Poor Boy Boxing gym. These fighters have fought three times, each winning a bout & one draw. The first rd started a little slow with each fighter showing respect. Towards the end of the rd Kenny starts landing crisp jabs. Keeping Louis on the defense. The second rd Louis came out more aggressive, landing two straight rights to Kenny's face, Kenny starts with the jab and ending with great combos to the right side of Louis. Kenny is applying pressure at the end of the rd. The next two rds Kenny is landing jabs, opening up Louis for combos, they stand in the middle letting the punches fly. Kenny catches Louis against the ropes with a straight right, left hook combo knocking louis's mouthpiece across the ring! Kenny doesn't stop throwing, dropping Louis to the canvas. After the standing 8 count. They both threw caution to the wind and were landing bombs! Kenny landed a double jab, right cross- left hook. Drops Monoco again, Monoco beats the count. Kenny wins by Unanimous decision.

Pablo Gomez and Fino Soltero at the weight in

The third bout was between Light heavyweights, Pablo Gomez ( 2-4-1 2 ko's) out of the H.O.P. Boxing gym vs. Fino Soltero out of Maytec gym
Pablo came out very aggressive, throwing some wild shots. He caught Fino a few times but nothing solid. Fino chose to stay on the defense looking for a counter.
In the second rd, Pablo starts where he ended the first rd, aggressive. Now, he is settling down and setting up the combos. Fino is content on countering, which lands a few solid punches to Pablo.
Third rd, Fino comes out the aggressor scoring some nice shots Pablo lands a flush left hand to Fino's face, realizing that Fino isn't going anywhere, and is here to fight. The last rd both fighters are throwing bombs, Pablo gets Fino against the ropes and scores to the body.
Pablo wins the bout by unanimous decision.

                                               Manual D. Lopez

The next bout, a 4 rounder was a debut for both fighters in the light welterweight. Manual D Lopez vs. Alejandro Ayala. Rd 1 both fighters show the jitters in the opening minutes. Manual show more discipline with hands up and good foot work. Then starts landing 1-2 jabs to the face of Alejandro, followed by 3-4 punch combos. Rd 2, the tempo and fight go up, as Alejandro becomes the aggressor landing his left hook at will. Manual catches Alejandro with a left hook/ right cross against the ropes, dropping Alejandro in the neutral corner.           After the standing 8 count, Alejandro is weak in the knees, Manuel catches him again with a double left/
right cross to the head, dropping Alejandro again. The third rd starts as the second round ended, with Manual bringing the heat! Manual lands 12 unanswered punches before referee stop the bout. Manual wins by way of tko! Manual has a great future ahead of him, if he is continual of his generalship in the ring.

The main event featured, Alfred "tornado" Romero ( 4-1 4 ko's) out of the H.O.P. Boxing gym vs. Daniel Calzada (3-4-2 1 ko's) out of Poor Boy gym. From the opening bell, both go at it like a "good ol ' fashion brawl"!
Daniel lands his right cross at will. There is a small mouse on Alfred's left eye. Rd 2 is the same, except Daniel is pressing in that traditional Mexican style. The last minute, Alfred is landing crisp combos to the body and head, but Daniel is not amused. He stays in the pocket, bobbing and weaving, still landing the right hand to Alfred's left eye.
In the third rd, Daniel continues the pace, landing combos to the body. Alfred answers with his own combos to the body, as he has Daniel against the ropes. The fourth to the sixth rd is the same give and take, with Alfred landing nice power shots, and Daniel staying in the fight showing a great chin. The last rd is as if it was the first rd, with both fighters throwing power shots at every chance. Alfred is landing rights to the head and finishing with a 3 punch combo. It was a war! Alfred wins by unanimous decision, ending A great night of fighting.

I just need to vent a little. I hate when I hear people disrespect boxing as useless in a street fight. I believe that it is based on nothing but pure ignorance. When I have trained street fighters combos and setting up punches. They all tell me "I know how to punch"... I say "lets spar" and they find out they can't last 2 min against a moving target . Then they panic under fire! The combos come fast and powerful. Power comes from the feet and end at the fists. Mobility causes havok, timing = power.

Standing Calf Raises Exercise Guide and Video

Standing Calf Raises Exercise Guide and Video

Standing Calf Raises Guide

Main Muscle: Calves

  1. Adjust the padded lever of the calf raise machine to fit your height.
  2. Place your shoulders under the pads provided and position your toes facing forward (or using any of the two other positions described at the beginning of the chapter). The balls of your feet should be secured on top of the calf block with the heels extending off it. Push the lever up by extending your hips and knees until your torso is standing erect. The knees should be kept with a slight bend; never locked. Toes should be facing forward, outwards or inwards as described at the beginning of the chapter. This will be your starting position.
  3. Raise your heels as you breathe out by extending your ankles as high as possible and flexing your calf. Ensure that the knee is kept stationary at all times. There should be no bending at any time. Hold the contracted position by a second before you start to go back down.
  4. Go back slowly to the starting position as you breathe in by lowering your heels as you bend the ankles until calves are stretched.
  5. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Caution: If you suffer from lower back problems, a better exercise is the calf press as during a standing calf raise the back has to support the weight being lifted. Also, maintain your back straight and stationary at all times. Rounding of the back can cause lower back injury.
Variations: There are several other ways to perform a standing calf raise. A barbell instead of a machine can be used instead as well as dumbbells, one leg or two legs at a time. Refer to the exercise descriptions of these movements below. A smith machine can be used for calf raises as well.

Bradford/Rocky Presses Guide

Main Muscle: Shoulders

  1. Sit on a Military Press Bench with a bar at shoulder level with a pronated grip (palms facing forward). Tip: Your grip should be wider than shoulder width and it should create a 90-degree angle between the forearm and the upper arm as the barbell goes down. This is your starting position.
  2. Once you pick up the barbell with the correct grip, lift the bar up over your head by locking your arms.
  3. Now lower the bar down to the back of the head slowly as you inhale.
  4. Lift the bar back up to the starting position as you exhale.
  5. Lower the bar down to the starting position slowly as you inhale. This is one repetition.
  6. Alternate in this manner until you complete the recommended amount of repetitions.
Variations: For more stress on the shoulders, only lift the bar until it is slightly above the head and then lower to the opposite side. In this manner you keep more constant tension on the shoulders while minimizing triceps involvement.

The shoulders take a lot of abuse in boxing so it is very important to strength the Delts and traps .

Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.

Alvarado set to fight Herrera April 14

By Francisco Salazar
In an attractive bout that had been in the works for some time, unbeaten Mike Alvarado will fight once-beaten junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera in a 10 round bout on April 14th, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman confirmed to Fightnews.com on Monday night. “Herrera is in to face Alvarado,” said Goodman. The fight will open the telecast of an HBO telecast, which will precede the main event bout between hard-hitting unbeaten lightweight fighters Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
In his last fight, Alvarado (32-0, 23 KOs) had to rally from an early deficit to stop former lightweight contender Breidis Prescott in the 10th and final round on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez bout on November 12th.
Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs) has won his last five bouts in a row since a controversial eight round split decision loss to former world title belt holder Mike Anchondo in December of 2009. Last January, Herrera won a hard-fought 12 round split decision over hard-hitting Russian Ruslan Provodnikov. In his last bout, he won a 10 round majority decision over Mike Dallas Jr. on June 24th at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA.
“This is a great opener for the HBO card,” said Alex Camponovo, chief matchmaker for Thompson Boxing Promotions, who promotes Herrera. “We have all the respect for Alvarado, but this will be a great fight for Mauricio. This will be great exposure for him.”
The card, which will be promoted by Top Rank, will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Tickets go on sale this Friday.

Denver’s Manny Perez upsets Edgar Santana on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”

Denver boxer Manny Perez used a persistent and strong left hook to upset Puerto Rico’s Edgar Santana by unanimous decision in a nationally-televised junior welterweight bout Friday in Dover, Del.
Perez (18-7-1) traded early rounds with the taller Santana (26-4), who was favored to win the co-main event on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights.” But Perez, who fought Brandon Rios to a draw in Denver in 2009, stayed on the attack against Santana and was the aggressor for much of the bout.
All three judges gave Perez a 96-94 decision. Perez had a 197-193 advantage in punches landed.
Perez fights out of the House of Pain gym in Denver, with trainer Steve Mestas.

Just got home from The House of Pain boxing gym. Walking into the gym I automatically heard the the timer ring the end of a round and see two young people. One shadow boxing in the ring the other hitting the speed bag.  I go to the far end of the gym and start warming up. Shadow boxing in front of the mirror for about 10 min, Grab my jump rope and start jumping for about 15 min.  As more young amateur start arriving the sweet music of the swooshing of the jump rope and the rhythm of the heavy bag getting hit. It helps me to let go of all that has been bothering me for the day.  Focusing  on my combos and head movement, had a great but hard work out
